Petroleum and gas have been found in small quantities in sand-stone west of Napa and Yountville, but not developed. The East Napa Mining Company drilled to a depth of between1000 and 1200 feet at the southern edge of Napa City, and at that NAPA COUNTY. 283 depth claim to have found oil indications, though they did notexpect oil until a depth of 2500 feet was reached. Althoughthe industry had its ups and downs, Napa County was one of Cali-fornias most important producers from 1864 to 1903, since whichlater date the decline has been very rapid. Though the present outlookis not particularly encouraging,* the success attending concentrationexperiments at the ^tna and Oat Hill mines, gives promise of atleast a partial revival.
